The Mountain West Center offers two student scholarships each year.

The Jones Scholarship, with a deadline in the fall, is for approximately $2,000 for Spring Semester at USU. Undergraduate and graduate students in the following majors are eligible: Communications, English, History, Languages, Philosophy, Liberal Arts, Political Science, Sociology, Social Work, Anthropology, and Economics.

The Sonne Scholarship, with a deadline in the spring, is for an incoming freshman majoring in a department in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and covers in-state tuition at USU for a year.


The Evans Biography Awards are given to outstanding book-length biographies written about people who lived in or significantly influenced the history of the Interior West. The Evans Biography Award of $10,000 goes to the best biography of the year, taking into account excellence in both research and writing. The $2,500 Evans Handcart Award goes to a biography that may be family or local history or written by an emerging author. The Evans Awards are funded by an endowment established in the name of David W. and Beatrice C. Evans . The deadline is February 20 for books published in the preceding calendar year.
